The Passion

Fascinating. Mel Gibson directs The Passion (trailer), which is indeed a Passion Play – i.e., takes place from last supper to crucifixion. Mel screens it for the Washington religious right; Anti-Defamation League and others are upset (based on what they saw of the screenplay). That article notes Mel’s dad is a Holocaust denier. The fussin’ doesn’t surprise me – don’t the gospels sort of pin it on the Jews? That’s politics, after all – the Romans were in power, so you don’t wanna blame them, and terrorism or Darth Vader hadn’t even been invented yet.

    Mel Gibson’s Facist Fantasy:
Apparently history is being rewritten as we smoke… There’s no mention in the Bible or anywher else of a satanic ghost figure in the gardens.. or of any influence that the Jews had over the fate of Jesus. Yet these points are heavily stressed in this movie, not to mention the gratuitious sado-masochistic gore. The only audience that Mel has really captured in the long run is the hard-core gay video rental crowd. For the rest of the poor believing suckers over the next week or two: You’d have been better off with the pint of Jack Daniels than pay to see this piece of S&M.

The only real historical record is that the Romans killed someone named Jesus between 31 and 33 AD, and it was the style at the time to “crucify” or nail a condemned prisoner to the cross, to maximize suffering and to set a good public example. As a matter of fact the term “christian” started out as a derogatory term for those followers of Jesus who preferred to call themselves “believers” or “the true ones,” but those names were already taken by bands that had signed with top labels.

My plan is to organize a posse that will go to a theater full of hard-core evangelical Opus Dei freakazoids, wait until the closing credits, and then block the aisles singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of LIfe” including the whistling. Hoping to start a riot. Anyone else want to stage a similar scene? Do it! A bit of the lyrics below, for your amusement and encouragement to lighten up this holy piece of S&M.

Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistling]Always look on the right side of life,
    [whistling]For life is quite absurd
    And death’s the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
    Forget about your sin.
    Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It’s your last chance, anyhow.
    So,…
Always look on the bright side of death,
[whistling]Just before you draw your terminal breath.
    [whistling]Life’s a piece of shit,
    When you look at it.
    Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke. It’s true.
    You’ll see it’s all a show.
Keep ’em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
    And…
Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistling]Always look on the right side of life.
