A Good Read: Ken Levine Interview and Other Things

The Escapist has an interview with Bioshock creator Ken Levine.

Very interesting! I wish there were more interviews like this on the web, like just chatting with game makers without all the bells and whistles of a new release. Like Inside the Actor’s Studio but wiith game makers…Hmm…

Also, in a silly misake while typing I ended up not at The Escapist, but The Escapist, a page dedicated to rpgs and larping. Once there I found The Square One Podcast which is a wee talk show for would-be gamers to learn the tricks of the trade as well as the traditions. I just thought the idea was darling. Teaching people to play role playing games via podcast, like isn’t that the sweetest thing? Trying to encourage others to use their imaginations. I’m not sure of the execution of the idea, but the heartfelt effort is pleasing to my inner eye.

Also check out this interview all about Lego and gaming! Two of my favourite things!

Slate's Gaming Club

Yup, it’s officially “Game of the Year” voting time. Slate’s Gaming Club convenes to discuss just that, with good ol’ Bioshock trotted out on the first page, and Tolito defending his oh-so-controversial pick Desktop Tower Defense on the second.

"Is the dark side stronger?" "No, no, no. Quicker, easier, more seductive."

So there I am, standing in front of one of Bioshock’s doe-eyed Little Sisters. Her Big Daddy guardian is laying at my feet (thanks to a healthy dose of electric buckshot), and now her fate is in my hands. My choice: off the brat and become significantly more powerful, or save her, with the understanding that future foes will become that much harder to take on.

Let Them (Re)Make Their Game!

So, when Bioshock came out everyone went gaga happy crazy yay and I’m so there, like, seriously it’s one of the best times ever on the 360. Then came the “Hey wait…I’ve played this before…” from the older generation of gamers that played a game called System Shock II a few years ago. That lovely and witty Brit Yahtzee really hammered it home in last Wednesday’s Zero Punctuation over at The Escapist. It brought up a point that I think needs to be addressed: Game designers repeating the past – is it so wrong? I for one don’t think so at all. The best example of going back to fix things you’d rather have done better in the first place is what I like to call the Lucasing Process.
