Plame Scandal

For those few Canucks who may not realize the depth of the Plame / Wilson / Rove scandal happening south of the border, see here for starters, read the original Novak column and then follow Josh Marshall and Atrios for updates. See this Rove profile for background. Brad DeLong has a great post about it, too.

  1. JP says:

Novak wrote a follow-up (link below) to his July column yesterday, Oct 1. Basically says it was his “nose for news” that sniffed out the leak and not really a leak at all, per se.

  2. D says:

First, I did not receive a planned leak. Second, the CIA never warned me that the disclosure of Wilson’s wife working at the agency would endanger her or anybody else. Third, it was not much of a secret.

    1. According to Newsday:

In an interview with Newsday on July 21, Novak had said his sources had come to him with the information about Plame. “I didn’t dig it out. It was given to me,” he said. “They thought it was significant. They gave me the name and I used it.”

    2. Irrelevant to the charges at hand.

    3. Atrios takes this one down.

In summary, Novak has said she was an ‘operative’ and that “two senior administration officials” told him that – and “it was given to me.” Now he says otherwise. He’s a lying liar one way or the other.

The alarming thing about this, that most people miss, is that it basically means the CIA has declared war on the White House. And lord only knows you don’t fuck with the CIA. I bet they’ve had Novak’s shit tapped since five minutes before his column came out. Apparently they’re pissed because: 1. White House blew someone’s cover, natch; 2. Tenet had to take the fall for the uranium story, which wasn’t the CIA’s fault; and 3. they were cut out of a lot of the suspect Iraq intelligence anyway – and are now being asked to take the heat for it. But it was Rumsfeld’s OSP who basically swallowed everything Ahmed Chalabi told them, and he’s got a history of fraud. But look who’s the head of the governing council now?
